‘Dear You’ Trailer – Family Secrets Cross Generations in Lan Hongchun’s Chinese Family Drama

Dear You, the new Chinese drama from writer-director Lan Hongchun, follows a family confronting a long-buried secret shaped by migration.

Told across generations, the film follows a debt-ridden young man whose journey to Thailand in search of his long-missing grandfather uncovers a decades-old story of love, sacrifice, and devotion. The film turns qiaopi, the letters sent home by overseas Chinese families that connected loved ones across generations, into an intimate story about the people who hold families together when home is divided by borders and time.

Starring Li Sitong, Wang Yantong, Wu Shaoqing, Zheng Runqi and Usha Seamkhum, the film is primarily told in the Chaoshan dialect, also known as Teochew, giving the family drama a strong cultural identity.

Dear You premiered in China in April before making its North American premiere as the Closing Night Film of the 25th New York Asian Film Festival, and is set to arrive in U.S. theaters on September 4, 2026, via Well Go USA Entertainment.

According to the official synopsis, in Dear You, a debt-ridden grandson travels to Thailand to find the grandfather he believes abandoned their family, hoping the man behind years of qiaopi letters and remittances can help pay his debts. Instead, he uncovers a lifelong act of love and sacrifice. Inspired by overseas Chinese traditions, Dear You has become a breakout success, touching global audiences with its story of family and devotion.

“The film was born from hundreds of heartfelt stories of overseas Chaoshan elders I gathered while filming my documentary overseas; their quiet longing for family and home land became the soul of this film,” said director Hongchun.
