Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong will be honored at the Mill Valley Film Festival with the 2026 MVFF Auteur Award and a Spotlight Program featuring his latest film, Possible Love, recently announced as South Korea’s official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards.
The event, which includes an onstage conversation with Lee, will take place on Friday, October 2, 2026.
Possible Love marks Lee’s first feature in eight years, following Burning, Poetry, Secret Sunshine, and Peppermint Candy. A story of two married couples – a laid-off worker and his spouse and a documentary filmmaker and her spouse – crossing paths to film a documentary and facing their different lives and hidden desires. Starring Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung, and Cho Yeo-jeong, in one of the largest gatherings of top-tier Korean acting talent in a single film.
Lee Chang-dong is a celebrated South Korean filmmaker and novelist whose films include Green Fish, Peppermint Candy, Oasis (Silver Lion for Best Director, Venice), Secret Sunshine, Poetry (Best Screenplay, Cannes), and Burning, which became the first Korean film to be shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Before turning to film, Lee was an acclaimed novelist and briefly served as South Korea’s Minister of Culture and Tourism.
The 49th Mill Valley Film Festival runs October 1–11, 2026, at venues throughout Marin County and the Bay Area.
