Naomi Watts is set to attend the San Sebastian International Film Festival, where she will receive the Donostia Award and present her latest film, The Housewife.
The Housewife, the debut feature from Ben Shirinian, stars Watts along with Tye Sheridan, Luke Evans, Michael Imperioli and Lena Olin.
Set in 1964 and based on a true story, the film tells the tale of a young journalist who tracks down a potential Nazi officer living secretly in New York and befriends the suspect’s charming wife.
Prior to his debut feature film, Canadian director Ben Shirinian penned short films including Lost in Motion (2012), Lost in Motion 2 (2013) and Josef et Aimée (2015).
Watts has starred in independent films plus big productions, and has received Academy Award nominations twice: for her role in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 21 Grams (2003), and for J.A. Bayona’s The Impossible (Official Selection out of competition, 2012).
She achieved international fame thanks to Mulholland Drive (2001), by David Lynch, and has also worked with filmmakers including Peter Jackson, David Cronenberg, Clint Eastwood, Michael Haneke, Audrey Diwan, Noah Baumbach and Rodrigo García, with whom she came to San Sebastián in 2009 to close the Official Selection out of competition with Mother & Child.
On the big screen, Watts will next star in Cody Fern’s feature-length directorial debut Closing Night, opposite Sarah Paulson and Odessa A’zion. She will next play legendary dancer Margot Fonteyn in the romantic ballet drama Margot & Rudi. Most recently, she starred alongside Bill Murray in Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s acclaimed adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s bestselling novel The Friend, which she also executive produced.
