Synopsis

A young Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan), eager to make his name as a hungry second son of a wealthy family in 1970s New York, comes under the spell of Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), the cutthroat attorney who would help create the Donald Trump we know today. Cohn sees in Trump the perfect protégé — someone with raw ambition, a hunger for success, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to win.

Writer Gabriel Sherman talked to Hollywood Reporter on what he think Trump’s reaction would be seeing the movie, “I think privately, there’s a lot for him to like in this movie. It does speak to a time in his life when he was actually building real things. I think publicly, it serves his political interests to pick fights with anyone, and we might be those people. But audiences should see through that. If he attacks the movie, it’s only because he thinks he’s going to score political points.”

Reviews

Matt Neglia in a Next Best Picture review gave the film a 7/10 score, praising the performances, “Although it might not be perfect, and some will rightfully question whether the timing of it is justified, Stan and Strong provide awards-worthy work that will get people talking and hopefully convince them to see Trump for who he is and has always been.”

David Rooney in a Hollywood Reporter review also praised Stan’s performance as Trump, writing, “Some will argue that Stan’s performance in the central role is a touch too likeable, but the actor does an excellent job, going beyond impersonation to capture the essence of the man”
