The music documentary ‘Louder Than You Think: A Lo-Fi History of Gary Young and Pavement’ which world premiered at the 2023 SXSW Festival where it won the 24 Beats per Second Audience Award, dives into the life of Gary Young, the drummer of 90s indie Rock sensation Pavement.
The documentary features interviews with Young himself alongside Stephen Malkmus, Scott Kannberg, Bob Nastanovich, Mark Ibold, and Chris Lombardi. ‘Louder Than You Think’ also features music from Pavement, Hospital, Gary Young, CRILL, The Authorities, Fall of Christianity, DUSTdevils, Superchunk, Railroad Jerk, and Teenage Fanclub.

Directed by Jed I. Rosenberg, ‘Louder Than You Think’ opens in select US theaters on October 3, 2024.
Synopsis
An up-close cinematic walkabout through the life of Gary Young, the original (and highly unlikely) drummer of indie rock royalty Pavement. His booze and drugs-fueled antics (on-stage handstands, gifting vegetables to fans) and haphazard production methods (accidentally helping launch the lo-fi aesthetic) were both a driving force of the band’s early rise and the cause of his eventual crash landing. Leaving a wake of joy and/or destruction at every turn, Gary teeters the thin line between free-form self-expression and chaotic self-destruction. Thirty years on with scoliosis, blood clots, and a shriveled liver, Gary is still drumming with no regrets.

Serena Seghedoni in a Loud and Clear Reviews gave the documentary a score of 4/5, writing, “What makes Louder Than You Think a truly gripping watch – and, at the same time, an absolutely heartwrenching one – has little to do with music, but lies in the devastating humanity conveyed by Gary himself.”
Jamie Healy in a Radio Times review also gave the documentary a score of 4/5, writing, “The genius touch of Rosenberg’s offbeat documentary is the use of Thunderbirds-style marionettes to re-enact events from Young’s life – a whimsical approach that feels wholly appropriate for this tragicomic portrait of a true musical maverick.”
