  • 6 Berlinale Classics to Screen in Retrospective at 2019 Berlin International Film Festival

    A total of six Berlinale Classics will be screening as part of the  Retrospective at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival. The Berlinale will mark a world premiere of the restored versions of five of the films, and the international premiere of one. In addition to classics from Germany, Denmark, and Hungary, the series will include film classics from the USA, Norway, and South Korea.

    The Favourite leads the nominations for the EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) in 2019 with nominations in 12 categories, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Original Screenplay,  Cinematography,  Production Design, Costume Design, Make Up & Hair, Editing and Yorgos Lanthimos for Director. Olivia Colman is nominated for Leading Actress for her role as Queen Anne, and Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone are both nominated for Supporting Actress.

Winners will be honored at the 2019 Awards, themed “Landscape of the Imagination,” on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.

  • American Society of Cinematographers Releases List of 100 Milestone Films

    A lasting milestone in epic filmmaking, Sam Spiegel’s production invaded the Arabian Desert for two years of grueling shooting. The resulting picture clearly illustrates the harsh, desolate conditions under which director David Lean, “lighting cameraman” (the British equivalent of the cinematographer) Freddy Young, BSC and their entire cast and crew toiled. The result was well worth their efforts, the rich colors of the landscape captured in glorious Super Panavision 70 and Technicolor.

    The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) celebrates its 100th anniversary today, and to mark the occasion, the society released their members’ list of 100 Milestone Films in the art and craft of cinematography of the 20th century. The list is the first of its kind to showcase the best of cinematography as selected by professional cinematographers.

    The 15th Glasgow Film Festival will open on February 20 with the UK premiere of Jonah Hill’s directorial debut Mid90s. The coming-of-age comedy-drama written and directed by Hill, stars Sunny Suljic (The Killing of a Sacred Deer), Lucas Hedges (Lady Bird) and Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them), and follows a 13-year-old boy who begins to hang out with an older group of skateboarders while living in 1990s Los Angeles. The soundtrack features an original score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross alongside original ‘90s hip-hop.
