HollyShorts Film Festival

 

The 10th Anniversary edition of the HollyShorts Film Festival will open with the premiere of Luke Wilson’s Award-winning short film Satellite Beach, which follows the unique journey of the Endeavor space shuttle as it travels through the streets of LA and the final move of the Atlantis space shuttle to the Kennedy Space Center. In addition, fest alumni brothers Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) will be honored with the HollyShorts Visionary Award on opening night. The festival and Film Conference take place August 14-23 at the TCL Chinese Theater and Roosevelt Hotel. 

The Russo Brothers, who are confirmed to direct the third installment of Captain America for Marvel, which will hit theaters May 2016, originally made their mark as indie filmmakers and later went on to direct and produce shows like Arrested Development and Community.  Cap tain America: The Winter Soldier had a $95 million debut earlier this year and has earned $712 million worldwide. The film will be released via Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D and DVD onSeptember 9, 2014. Through the years they’ve helped inspire young filmmakers at HollyShorts by participating in a number of panel discussions and workshops.

Satellite Beach was written and directed by Luke Wilson and his brother Andrew Wilson. The film was shot during Endeavor’s actual move through the streets of Los Angeles. The film was produced by Steve Eckleman, Christopher Mallick, and co-produced by Peter Mergus, Christy Taylor Barnes and Larry Chavana. The film has won a number of Awards including Santa Barbara International Film Festival- The Bruce Corwin Award for Best Live Action Short Film Under 30 Minutes, High Desert International Film Festival- Winner for Best Actor- Luke Wilson, Winner for Best Screenplay, Winner for Best Live Drama, Knoxville Film and Music Festival- Best Short Film.

HOLLYSHORTS BEST SHORT FILM-Tsuyako by Mitsuyo Miyazaki

The 9th Annual HollyShorts Film Festival wrapped after running August 15 – 22, 2013, with the festival’s Awards ceremony celebration at the Roosevelt Hotel Ballroom and lobby hosted by Digital LA’s Kevin Winston. The HollyShorts Best Short Film Grand Prize went to Mitsuyo Miyazaki for her short film Tsuyako, the Best Director prize was awarded to Sacha Feiner for Un Monde Meilleur (A Better World); and the short film Sahasi Chori by Erin Galey took home two HollyShorts Awards, one for Best Producer and the Women in Film Director’s Award. The festival also announced that next year’s festival, it’s 10th Anniversary edition, will take place August 14 – 23, 2014 in Hollywood.

HollyShorts opens this week on Thursday August 15 with it’s first ever opening feature film, David Rodriguez’s star-studded dramedy LAST I HEARD. LAST I HEARD stars Paul Sorvino, Michael Rapaport, Renee Props, Andrea Nitolli and Lev Gorn. The film which features the first onscreen pairing of mafia movie legends Sorvino and Chazz Palminteri (The Usual Suspects), focuses on what it’s like to be a powerful NY mobster coming home from prison after 20 yrs, and all that you have left are the memories of who you used to be.

In 1990 mafia capo Joseph ‘MR. JOE’ Scoleri was arrested and sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for a myriad crimes. In 2010 the ailing Mr. Joe was released. While home, he tries to re-connect with his daughter RITA and establish a relationship with his neighbor BOBBY. He realizes through these relationships that the life he knew no longer exists and, nothing is the same as it was before he went away.

Matthew Modine will be honored with the 2013 Indie Maverick Award at the upcoming 9th Annual HollyShorts Film Festival taking place August 15-22. As part of the celebration, Modine will showcase his purposefully provocative short film JESUS WAS A COMMIE on opening night.

In addition, Modine will speak with the festival’s filmmakers during the theatrical special screening of ShortsHD’s presentation of THE SHORT FILMS OF MATTHEW MODINE, a collection of Modine’s short films spanning two decades that will close the festival on Thursday, August 22. The Short Films of Matthew Modine includes: When I Was a Boy (1993), Smoking (1995), Ecce Pirate (1996), To Kill An American (2005), I Think I Thought (2007), and Jesus Was A Commie. His shorts range in genre – ironic comedy, drama, historic adventure, and documentary narrative.

THE IMMIGRANT

HollyShorts unveiled the official lineup for the 9th Annual HollyShorts Film Festival taking place August 15 – 22,2013 at the TCL Chinese Theatre, Hollywood Blvd  Los Angeles, California. The festival added two high profile star-studded short films to its opening night celebration, taking place on Thursday August 15. Michael J. Weithorn’s superhero short film THE SIDEKICK starring Rob Benedict, Ron Livingston, and Lizzy Caplan will open the festival along with Josh Levy’s award-winning short comedy THE IMMIGRANT starring Scott Thompson, Dave Foley, Deborah Theaker, Deadlee, Michael Cera, Margaret Cho and Will Forte.

THE SIDEKICK and THE IMMIGRANT will screen in a separate short films showcase screening following the festival’s presentation of David Rodriguez’s feature film LAST I HEARD, which stars Paul Sorvino, Michael Rapaport, Renee Props, Andrea Nittoli, and Lev Gorn. Immediately following the feature film screening, the fest will unspool its shorts showcase which includes Chadwick Boseman’s (42) drama short HEAVEN, Dan Carrillo Levy’s ZERO HOUR starring Camilla Belle, Jaime Camil, written by Guillermo Arriaga, and Thomas Jane and Director Phil Joanou’s PUNISHER: DIRTY LAUNDRY.

THE SIDEKICK

THE SIDEKICK also stars Josh Meyers, Jordan Peele, Martin Starr, Richard Speight Jr., Ike Barinholtz, Jason Ritter, Sam McMurray, Laura Silverman and Fred Stoller. THE SIDEKICK centers on a 40-year-old career sidekick, Max McCabe (Benedict), now past his prime in the fast-paced world of superhero-dom. When he is unceremoniously fired by his boss, Captain Wonder (Livingston), Max has no choice but to somehow find a place for himself in the regular world.

THE IMMIGRANT also stars Luis Jiminez, and Gilbert Martinez. THE IMMIGRANT tells the story of once-famous comedian Bob London (Thompson), after being deported back to his native Canada, attempts a Hollywood comeback by enlisting human smugglers to sneak him across the Mexico-U.S. border. Bob finds himself rejected by his former manager and famous friends, penniless and alone, he is then adopted by a pair of migrant workers who resolve to show Bob how to make it in America.

HollyShorts, considered “the premier festival showcasing the top short films” is coming to New York City on Friday March 29th. 

For the first time in the festival’s history, HollyShorts will be have a New York City screening series at the Showbiz store located at 19 W 21st St. New York, NY 10010 and on the same night there will be a separate program screening celebration at the Showbiz store LA located at 500 S Sepulveda Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90049.

Audiences at each screening get to choose their favorite film and the film with the most votes gets entered into the prestigious august festival held at the TCL Chinese Theatre, Hollywood, August 15th-25th.

From August 12-18, 2011, the 7th HollyShorts is showcasing 300 short form projects including short films, music videos, web series, and commercials. The full lineup has been released and includes the premiere of acclaimed writer Jamie Linden (Dear John, We Are Marshall) short film “The Envelope in the Glovebox” which he used to pitch into the star-studded feature film adaptation Ten Year, that stars Channing Tatum, Kate Mara, Rosario Dawson, Justin Long, Anthony Mackie, and Scott Porter. “The Envelope in the Glovebox” written and directed by Linden will be featured at the HollyShorts opening night celebration at Arclight Hollywood, Thursday August 11.

Also joining Linden in the festival’s opening night celebration is Jacob Chase’s short film “After-School Special” which was written by Neil Labute (In the Company of Men, Nurse Betty), and produced by Andrew Carlberg. At HollyShorts opening night, the festival will also present Labute with a special Maverick Filmmaker Award. His short film “Sexting” will screen during the festival.

The opening night celebration will also honor the award-winning production team of Kevin Chinoy and Francesca Silvestri with the inaugural HollyShorts Maverick Producer’s Award and feature a screening of their top shorts including Kristen Kiwi Smith’s “The Spleendectomy,” starring Anna Faris, Jennifer Aniston and Andrea Buchanan’s “Room 10;” Jennifer Aniston’s “Free Burma,” starring  Woody Harrelson; Kate Hudson’s “Cutlass,” starring Dakota Fanning, Virgina Madsen, Kurt Russell, and Kirsten Stewart; and Sean Baker, Spencer Chinoy and Dan Milano’s hit “Greg The Bunny.”

HollyShorts will also showcase two Oscar® winning short films Luke Matheny’s God of Love (Best Short Film, Live Action winner) and Andrew Ruhemann and Shaun Tan’s The Lost Thing (Best Animation winner) .

The 6th Annual HollyShorts Film Festival came to a close in August, with Nicholas Carmen’s short film “Piano Fingers” taking home the top Grand Jury Prize for Best Short Film Presented by Company 3. Carmen took home a $10,000 post production services package from Company 3. Grzegorz Jonkajtys won the Best Director Award also presented by Company 3. Jonkajtys directed the acclaimed Sci Fi short film “The Third Letter” which drew a packed house when it screened on Saturday August 7 at Laemmle’s Sunset 5 and also won a $10,000 post production prize from Company 3. The awards were announced during a special ceremony hosted by Jessica King at MyStudio in Hollywood on Thursday evening.
