    This year’s 9th edition of the Montclair Film Festival (MFF) will open on Friday, October 16, with Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland and close on Saturday, October 24, with Regina King’s One Night in Miami…. The festival taking place October 16-25, 2020 in Montclair, NJ will screen the Opening, Closing, and Centerpiece Films at the Montclair Film Festival’s Carpool Theater drive-in, with the Virtual Centerpiece screening on Montclair Film’s new Virtual Cinema platform.

Screenings were balloted throughout the festival across four categories: Fiction Feature, Documentary Feature, World Cinema, and Short Film. Who We Are Now directed by Matthew Newton, was awarded the festival’s Fiction Feature Audience Award. The Sentence directed by Rudy Valdez took home the Audience Award for Documentary Feature. The Guilty directed by Gustav Möller won the World Cinema Audience Award. The Driver is Red directed by Randall Christopher, winning the Audience Award for Short Film. “Our Audience Awards winners represent the power of storytelling to build connection and foster conversation around the art of filmmaking” said Tom Hall, Montclair Film executive director. “We are grateful to our wonderful audiences for their thoughtful engagement with all of our filmmakers and their films.”

  • Paul Schrader’s FIRST REFORMED, WE THE ANIMALS Among Winners at 2018 Montclair Film Festival

      [caption id="attachment_28919" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]First Reformed, directed by Paul Schrader First Reformed[/caption] The seventh annual Montclair Film Festival took place April 26 through May 6, 2018, and on Saturday night, the festival announced the winners  of the 2018 film competitions at the festival’s annual awards ceremony. “This year’s competition program features the work of artists who directly challenge us to deepen our thinking about the world in which we live” said Montclair Film Executive Director Tom Hall. “We are honored to share these films with our audiences, and congratulate all of our filmmakers on their outstanding work.” First Reformed, directed by Paul Schrader, was awarded the festival’s Fiction Feature Prize; with Julianne Nicholson receiving a Special Jury Prize for her performance in Matthew Newton’s Who We Are Now. Hale County This Morning, This Evening, directed by RaMell Ross, took home the Bruce Sinofsky Award in the festival’s Documentary Feature competition. This award was established in memory of Bruce Sinofsky and was presented by Mr. Sinofsky’s daughter, Claire Sinofsky. A Special Jury Prize was awarded to Black Mother, directed by Khalik Allah. We The Animals, directed by Jeremiah Zagar, was awarded with the Future/Now prize honoring emerging low-budget American independent filmmaking, with a Special Jury Prize given to Helena Howard for her performance in Madeline’s Madeline, directed by Josephine Decker. Crime + Punishment, directed by Stephen Maing, took home the New Jersey Films Award, which honors a select group of films made by New Jersey artists, with Liyana receiving a Special Jury Prize for directors Aaron Kopp and Amanda Kopp. Dark Money, directed by Kimberly Reed, took home the 4th Annual David Carr Award for Truth in Non-Fiction Filmmaking, which honors a filmmaker, selected by the festival, who utilizes journalistic techniques to explore important contemporary subjects and is presented in honor of Mr. Carr’s commitment to reporting on the media. The award was presented by Mr. Carr’s daughter, the filmmaker Erin Lee Carr.

  • Montclair Film Announces Student Winners of 2017 Emerging Filmmaker Competition

    Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell Montclair Film Festival Montclair Film announced the winners of the 2017 Emerging Filmmaker Competition (EFC), a program that screens work by students in grades 4-12 from the Tri-State Area and beyond.  This year, over 90 films were submitted in three categories: Cinemaniacs (grades 4-6), Storytellers (grades 7-9), and Visionaries (grades 10-12). Winning films were selected by a group of educators and industry professionals, and all winning films will be screened at the Montclair Film Festival’s EFC Showcase on Saturday, April 29, at 11:00 a.m. at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ. Montclair Film has also selected 15 students from across the area to participate in the Montclair Film Festival’s Junior Jury. The jurors will review a selection of films, meet with industry professionals to learn about the process of jury deliberation, adjudicate, and select a winning film for the festival’s Junior Jury Award, to be given on Saturday, May 6th, 2017. The Montclair Film Festival, in conjunction with the Montclair Special Education Parents Advisory Council (SEPAC), will also be featuring two Sensory Friendly screenings for families this year. Sensory friendly screenings feature lowered sound, raised house lights, and the freedom for young people with sensory sensitivities to move, speak, and view films in a friendly, judgement-free environment. This year’s screenings will be INTO THE WHO KNOWS!, screening Sunday, April 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Clairidge (suggested for children ages 6 and up), and SWIM TEAM on Friday, May 5 at 4:30 p.m. at the Bellevue (suggested for ages 12 and up). The Montclair Film Festival will also feature a public art reception on Saturday, May 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the Investors Bank Film & Media Center, showcasing a collaborative student Air/Water Art Installation, co-presented by the Montclair Cooperative School that focuses on this year’s Community Climate Action Campaign. The piece, featuring thousands of re-purposed plastic bottles and mixed materials, will be on display throughout the Montclair Film Festival on the rear façade of the building, located at 505 Bloomfield Avenue. The reception is free and open to the public. “As our Education programs continue to grow, we’re incredibly proud of these students, both as filmmakers and film lovers,” said Montclair Film Education Director Sue Hollenberg. “We remain dedicated to creating meaningful experiences for students of all ages, and the diversity and reach of these programs are a demonstration of our commitment to teaching the art of film. We congratulate all of our students on their outstanding work.”

  • Amanda Lipitz’s STEP to Open and Zoe Lister-Jones’ BAND AID to Close 2017 Montclair Film Festival

    [caption id="attachment_19944" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Step by Amanda Lipitz STEP[/caption] The 6th Montclair Film Festival, taking place April 28 to May 7, 2017, will open with Amanda Lipitz’s STEP on Friday, April 28 and close with Zoe Lister-Jones’ BAND AID on Saturday, May 6.  In addition, the fiction centerpiece film, Geremy Jasper’s PATTI CAKE$, will be presented on Friday, May 5 and the documentary centerpiece film, Stanley Nelson’s TELL THEM WE ARE RISING: AMERICA’S BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES will be presented on Saturday, May 6. Montclair Film is teaming up with the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) on a partnership that helps build meaningful opportunity for African American professionals in the film and television industry, and which celebrates the work of established artists in the field. This year’s partnership includes a new program, Emerging Black Voices, which will offer opportunity to filmmakers and producers at both the MFF and ABFF, as well as multiple panel discussions, screenings, and the House Party, a celebration of African American filmmakers held each year at the MFF. The festival will welcome Retro Report as the partner for a two-part series at this year’s festival that examines the state of news, reporting, and media consumption. The partnership features a program of films, curated by the Retro Report team and including the premiere of their latest film ZAPRUDER , that examines the way in which media stories can shape the public conversation, as well as a conversation entitled TRUE OR FALSE?: REPORTING IN THE AGE OF “FAKE NEWS” which will feature a panel of distinguished journalists and offer a look inside the job of reporting the facts when audiences are more inclined than ever to challenge them. Two special restorations – George Romero’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and Andrei Tarkovsky’s STALKER will be presented at this year’s festival. First, George Romero’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD will screen in a stunning new 4K restoration and will be presented on April 29 at the Wellmont Theater. Featured special guests will include Producer Russ Streiner, who also played Johnny in the film and delivered the now-famous line “They’re coming to get you, Barbara,” actress Kyra Schon, who portrayed the 11 year-old Karen Cooper in the film and provided one of the film’s most unforgettable moments, and investor and the film’s sound recordist Gary Streiner, who oversaw the film’s restoration on behalf of Image Ten. Next, the Festival will present Mosfilm’s beautiful new 2K restoration of Andrei Tarkovsky’s STALKER, screening Saturday, April 29. This restoration will be the first film ever screened in Cinema505, Montclair Film’s own cinema located in their new home at the Investors Bank Film and Media Center at 505 Bloomfield Avenue in downtown Montclair.

    Montclair Film Festival The 5th Annual Montclair Film Festival taking place April 29 to May 8th, 2016 announced the opening of its annual film submission process. With three competitive categories in fiction, documentary, and low-budget independent filmmaking, as well as programs in six non-competitive categories including fiction, documentary, world cinema, short films, New Jersey films, and student filmmaking, the Montclair Film Festival is seeking diverse films that represent a wide-range of stories, styles, and experiences.   • Lucie Borleteau’s FIDELIO: ALICE’S ODYSSEY Wins Top Award at 2015 Montclair Film Festival

    Fidelio: Alice’s Journey (Fidelio: L’Odyssée d’Alice) The 2015 Montclair Film Festival (MFF) for the first time announced competition awards, with Lucie Borleteau’s FIDELIO: ALICE’S ODYSSEY (pictured above) taking home the Narrative Feature Jury prize. The narrative competition jury also awarded a special jury prize to Yury Bykov’s THE FOOL for storytelling. The festival inaugurated two awards in honor of the late David Carr and Bruce Sinofsky, both Montclair residents. THE RUSSIAN WOODPECKER, directed by Chad Gracia, took home the Bruce Sinofsky Prize in the festival’s Documentary Feature competition.  This award was established in memory of Bruce Sinofsky and was presented by Sinofsky’s long time friend and collaborator Joe Berlinger (PARADISE LOST I, II, AND III). Brad Barber and Scott Christopherson’s PEACE OFFICER took home the David Carr Award for Truth in Non-Fiction Filmmaking, which honors a filmmaker, selected by the festival, who utilizes journalistic techniques to explore important contemporary subjects. The award was presented by Ta-Nehisi Coates, a longtime friend and colleague of Carr. Elise DuRant’s EDÉN was awarded with the Future/Now prize, honoring emerging low-budget American independent filmmaking, and Marah Strauch’s SUNSHINE SUPERMAN took home the New Jersey Films Award, which honors a selected group of films made by New Jersey artists.  The junior jury prize went to Alexandra Shiva’s documentary HOW TO DANCE IN OHIO. “We’re thrilled to be launching these awards for our fourth installment, and to honor the diverse group of talented filmmakers,” said MFF founder and Chairman Bob Feinberg. “This has been a significant year for us and it truly exemplifies the festival’s impact and growth, as we continue to lay the groundwork for many more successful years ahead.” “This year’s festival featured over 135 films and we are incredibly proud of each and every one of our filmmakers. This year’s festival features over 135 feature and short films, and for the first time will cover ten days, expanding from seven days in its first three years. For the first time, the festival will feature filmmaking awards, competitions and audience awards, all of which will be presented on Saturday, May 9th at the MFF’s inaugural Filmmaker Awards ceremony. Competitive categories include the Narrative Feature Competition, Documentary Feature Competition, Future/Now, honoring emerging low-budget American independent filmmaking, and the New Jersey Films Competition, which honors a selected group of films made by New Jersey artists. Audience Awards will be given in the Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, World Cinema, and Short film categories. The festival will also present two awards in honor of the late David Carr and Bruce Sinofsky, both Montclair residents. The David Carr Award for Truth in Non-Fiction Filmmaking will honor a filmmaker, selected by the festival, who utilizes journalistic techniques to explore important contemporary subjects. In conjunction with the Carr family, this award is established by the festival in memory of David Carr and will be presented by Mr. Carr’s friend and colleague Brian Stelter (CNN’s Reliable Sources).
