The Sarasota Film Festival unveiled the special edition 20th Anniversary poster for the upcoming 2018 festival designed by local designer, Kelsey Hunt-Dolan. This year the festival will take place April 13th through the 22nd, 2018.
This year’s artwork represents the 20th celebration of the Sarasota Film Festival and the lasting impact from various artists. The Roman numerals “XX” on the poster commemorate the historic 20 year anniversary for the festival. John Ringling’s David statue, a replica of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s original masterpiece, is known as the symbol of Sarasota and resides in The Ringling Museum courtyard. John Ringling carved this statue between the mid-19th to early 20th century as a momentum for local artists. He had hoped to open a school of art prior to his demise, but left this statue behind to inspire future artists.
“We are very pleased with this year’s collaborative effort at designing our twentieth anniversary poster containing Michelangelo’s Statue of David, one of the most beautiful pieces of art known to man and a symbol of our great city,” said Mark Famiglio, President of the Sarasota Film Festival. “In these last 20 years, we have watched the festival evolve into a captivating and engaging showcase of diverse films, highlighting the unique and distinct voice from artists nationally and internationally. We look forward to the next 20 years as we salute our community and film lovers from around the world.”

Sarasota Film Festival Unveils 2017 Artwork Designed by Tyler Mathis
The Sarasota Film Festival unveiled its 2017 artwork created by Tyler Mathis, a Motion Design student at Ringling College of Art and Design.
This is the second consecutive year the Sarasota Film Festival and the Ringling College of Art and Design have partnered together to develop the concept and design to help market and brand the upcoming festival. This is the first time three different posters will be used to market the festival, each one donning the slogan in a multidimensional- play on words, “See and Be Seen”, “Sea and Be Seen” and “See and be Scene”.
The three images selected will be featured on SFF banners throughout Main Street in Sarasota starting February 15th. They will also be seen on all major festival materials such as mailings, play bills, and sponsorship ads.
“This year’s artwork not only represents the festival but the entire community of Sarasota,” said Mark Famiglio, President of the Sarasota Film Festival. “The slogan this year “See and Be Scene” invites our audience to attend the festival and participate in our community. Collaborating with the Ringling College of Art and Design has proven once again that a community can create beautiful work by working together.”
“We greatly value our relationship with Sarasota Film Festival, as it presents incredible opportunities for our students—both through our Collaboratory and our rising Film program,” says Dr. Larry R. Thompson, President of Ringling College of Art and Design. “We view the SFF as a vital partner in further developing our creative region as a hub for emerging and established filmmakers, and we celebrate the opportunity for our students at Ringling to create artwork that supports our shared initiatives—always keeping creativity right at the center.”

Pasadena Starring Peter Bogdanovich, Cheryl Hines to World Premiere at 2013 Sarasota Film Festival

PASADENA, the new independent ‘dramedy’ starring Peter Bogdanovich, Cheryl Hines, Alicia Witt, Sonya Walger and Ashton Holmes will have its World Premiere today, Saturday April 13, 2013, in Sarasota, Florida, at the 2013 Sarasota International Film Festival.

PASADENA was written and directed by Will Slocombe. Set in present-day Pasadena and constructed around a series of meals, PASADENA is about what happens when you set a match to a powder keg. It’s about honesty. It’s about love. It’s about trying your best. Ultimately, it’s about the kind of emotional terrorism that only families can inflict upon one another.
Thanksgiving get-together for the eccentric Turner clan, presided over by eminent scholar and patriarch, POPPY (Peter Bogdanovich), turns into a disastrous holiday weekend when black sheep daughter NINA (Alicia Witt) pays her first visit home in 15 years. Nina immediately clashes with stepmother, DEBORAH (Cheryl Hines), and competes with her siblings (Ashton Holmes and Sonya Walger) for Poppy’s affection – and money. Over three days, the family gradually disintegrates over who will get Poppy’s money – only to discover Poppy has his own bad news to share…

NOR’EASTER to Screen at the 2013 Sarasota International Film Festival

NOR’EASTER is screening this upcoming weekend at the 2013 Sarasota International Film Festival in Sarasota, Florida. NOR’EASTER was written and directed by Andrew Brotzman.
A young priest, Erik (David Call, TINY FURNITURE, Gossip Girl) serves as the lone Catholic authority on a small island off the coast of Maine. After a poorly attended mass, Erik is visited by Ellen Greene, the mother of Joshua, a child who has been missing for five years. Josh’s absence has pushed Ellen’s marriage to the breaking point, and though her husband strenuously objects, she and the priest decide to hold a symbolic funeral in an effort to move on.

When the family’s decision becomes public, Josh inexplicably returns to the island, alive and well. Now sixteen years old, Josh appears unharmed, but refuses to answer questions about where he has been.
Erik interprets Josh’s return as a divine event and involves himself in the family’s affairs in an effort to both help them and affirm his own faith. He proves to be the only one able to uncover Josh’s past whereabouts, but in doing so, causes more problems than he could have ever anticipated, threatening his relationship to the family, the church, and the law.
NOR’EASTER was written and directed by Andrew Brotzman. It has a running time of 85 minutes and is not yet rated by the MPAA.
The 2013 Sarasota International Film Festival runs April 5 – 14, 2013 in Sarasota, Florida.

The award will be presented at the annual Tribute Luncheon, Sarasota Yacht Club on Friday, April 12th. Ms. Sumner was seen most recently on stage in New York City opposite Carol Kane in the Atlantic Theater Company’s production of THE LYING LESSON. Ms. Sumner joins previously announced guests Suzanne Clément, Griffin Dunne, Mariel Hemingway, Barbara Kopple and Lili Taylor in receiving honors at the Tribute. Ms. Sumner will also introduce the festival’s screening of FRANCES HA on Saturday, April 13th at The Sarasota Opera House.
Cheryl Hines, star of the festival’s Spotlight film PASADENA, will serve as host for the festival’s Filmmaker Awards, Saturday, April 13th at 6:00 PM at The Sarasota Opera House.
In addition, several former Sea World whale trainers have announced that they will be joining the festival’s Opening Night screening of BLACKFISH to participate in a provocative post-screening Q&A, along with the film’s director Gabriela Cowperthwaite. The group includes John Hargrove, Samantha Berg, Carol Ray, John Jett and Jeff Ventre.
Also joining the festival is David Call (GOSSIP GIRL, TINY FURNITURE) who has three films in the festival with DEAD MAN’S BURDEN, NOR’EASTER, and the short film MOBILE HOMES while WWE superstar Brodus Clay will attend with his film NO ONE LIVES on Saturday, April 13th.
“We are honored to welcome these wonderful guests to our festival,” says Festival Director Tom Hall. “Sarasota is a city that celebrates the arts, and we hope our community joins us in embracing these artists and their work.”
