Writers, directors, and actors in the sidebar who have not made more than three feature films have a shot at the prize, as well as producers who have not made more than six feature films. Candidates from fourteen films qualify this year. All are world premieres at the festival.

CHASING THE MOON, directed by Robert Stone snagged the Audience Award for Best Feature at the AFI DOCS 2019. The Audience Award for Best Short went to ST. LOUIS SUPERMAN, directed by Smriti Mundhra and Sami Khan.

The Sweet Requiem (Kyoyang Ngarmo), the award-winning film by Tenzing Sonam and Ritu Sarin (a husband and wife filmmaking team) which had its world premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival will open theatrically at IFC Center in New York on July 12. Other cities will follow.

The 2019 Palm Springs International ShortFest announced its Festival juried award winners with the Romanian film The Christmas Gift, directed by Bogdan Muresanu, winning the Best of Festival Award. The prize for Best International Short went to Guaxuma directed by Nara Normande; and Manila is Full of Men Named Boy directed by Andrew Stephen Lee won for Best U.S. Short.
