Pedro Almodovar’s Oscar-nominated Pain and Glory swept the top awards on Saturday at 34th Goya Awards, Spain’s version of the Oscars, winning a total of seven awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Antonio Banderas won the award for Best Actor, Julieta Serrano for Best Supporting Actress in addition to awards for Best Editing, and Best Original Music.
The 31st annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) will screen 188 films from 81 countries, opening with An Almost Ordinary Summer, directed by Simone Godano, on Friday, January 3, and close with Military Wives, directed by Peter Cattaneo on Sunday, January 12.
The Brazilian film Pacificado / Pacified, directed by Paxton Winters, is the winner of the Golden Shell for Best Film at the 67th edition of the San Sebastian Festival and the first Brazilian production to win the prize in the history of the Festival. Darren Aronofsky, Paula Linhares, Marcos Tellecheak, Lisa Muskat and Winters himself are the producers of this film set in the favelas of Brazil. As well as carrying off the Festival’s highest accolade, Pacified garnered another two recognitions: the Best Actor Silver Shell for Bukassa Kabengele and the Award for Best Cinematography going to Laura Merians.
Fifteen Spanish films including ‘La hija de un ladrón (A Thief’s Daughter)’, ‘La trinchera infinita (The Endless Trench)’ and ‘Mientras dure la guerra (While at War)’ will compete for the Golden Shell at the 67th edition of the San Sebastian Festival. In addition, Daniel Sánchez Arévalo will present ‘Diecisiete (Seventeen)’ out of competition and ‘La odisea de los giles (Heroic Losers)’ by Sebastián Borensztein will have a special screening
