Forty-one films and series are nominated for this year for the 30th Annual IFP Gotham Awards, considered one of the leading awards for independent film and signaling the kick-off to the film awards season. Best Feature nominations went to The Assistant, First Cow, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Nomadland, and Relic, becoming the first time all of the best feature nominees are directed by women. In total, eleven competitive awards will be presented to independent features and series.

CUFF.Docs, the 7th Annual Documentary Film Festival presented by Calgary Underground Film Festival (CUFF), starts this Wednesday night, November 27, with the Sundance hit THE AMAZING JOHNATHAN DOCUMENTARY, about the final tour of a dying magician, “The Amazing Johnathan”, which turns into an unexpected and increasingly bizarre journey as the filmmaker struggles to separate truth from illusion. The 5-day festival runs until Sunday, Dec 1 at Globe Cinema.
The 8th Annual Key West Film Festival announced its official 2019 lineup including major fall films from Noah Baumbach and Destin Daniel Cretton. More than 115 films and V/R pieces will be shown during the 5-day festival, which runs November 20-24. Nearly half of the feature films at the festival will be Florida festival premieres.
Burning Cane, directed and written by teen filmmaker Phillip Youmans won the top honor at the 18th Annual Tribeca Film Festival – the Founders Award for Best U.S. Narrative Feature. The film also won the prizes for Best Cinematography and Best Actor for Wendell Pierce. Other top awards went to House of Hummingbird (Beol-sae) for Best International Narrative Feature, and Scheme Birds for Best Documentary Feature.

Yang Sun and S. Leo Chiang’s OUR TIME MACHINE is an intimate look at Chinese artist Maleonn(Ma Liang) as he sets out to stage an ambitious performance piece about time and memory when his father, the former artistic director of the Shanghai Chinese Opera Theater, is diagnosed with dementia. Maleonn hopes the work will bring the them together artistically and personally but as time goes on, and his father’s condition deteriorates, he is torn between the original goal to honor his father and the pressure of finding commercial success.
The 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, presented by AT&T, today unveiled its feature film lineup of 103 films from 124 filmmakers. The films selected in the three competition sections consist of 50% women directed films. The 2019 Tribeca Film Festival takes place April 24 – May 5.
