White on White (Blanco en blanco) Chile’s official submission for International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards® will be released in the US in December via Outsider Pictures.
The film, the second feature by director Théo Court, winner of the Best Director and FIPRESCI Award in the Orizzonti competition at the Venice Film Festival, opens on Friday, December 10 at Cinema Village in New York City, and at the Laemmle Monica Film Center in Los Angeles.
Set at the dawn of the twentieth century in Tierra del Fuego, a violent and hostile territory at the tip of Argentina where the continent meets the Straits of Magellan, White on White follows Pedro—played by Alfredo Castro, seen in many of Pablo Larraín’s Chilean films, and star of From Afar and Rojo amongst many others—a middle aged photographer who arrives to take wedding portraits of Miss Sara (Esther Vega), the soon to be child-bride of the powerful landowner Mr. Porter (Lars Rudolph).
Fascinated by the young girl’s beauty he betrays the rules and becomes entrapped in the unsettled territory as a complicit witness to the genocide of the Selknam indigenous people.
With an impressive cast and an elegant cinematography, White on White is a poignant slow-burn neo-western that delves on the dire effects of colonialism and the casual violence of its photographic representation.
