Executive produced by Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, and Jennifer Lawrence, Zurawski v Texas is a documentary on abortion rights in Texas. The documentary follows women who were denied abortions as they band together to sue the state of Texas.
Zurawski v Texas world premiered earlier this year at the 51st Telluride Film Festival. The documentary also screened at the 47th Mill Valley Film Festival where it won the Active Cinema Audience Award, the 33rd Heartland International Film Festival where it won the Richard D. Propes Documentary Social Impact Award, and the Santa Fe International Film Festival where it won the Documentary Feature Special Jury Award.
Release Date
Directed by Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault, Zurawski v Texas opens in select US theaters on October 25, 2024, and online for free on October 26-27, 2024.
Synopsis
Women denied abortions under Texas’ ambiguous and unforgiving abortion bans band together with a fearless attorney to sue Texas. While battling in court against the state and its immovable Attorney General, the extent of their traumatic experiences is revealed as they wrestle to regain their reproductive futures and set a precedent for millions of other women and families. Zurawski v Texas reveals the dire impact of losing access to healthcare—and the extraordinary efforts of the women and men fighting on the frontline to regain those rights.
Reviews
Ema Sasic in a Next Best Picture review gave the documentary a score of 8/10, writing, “Though “Zurawski v Texas” may be straightforward and conventional in its presentation, that doesn’t take away from how vastly powerful and important this film is as it relates to current events.”
Tomris Laffly in a Variety review also praised the film, writing, “For all of the women and their families, there are some small wins of dignity along the way. But it’s no spoiler to say that the continuing losses are far greater and more consequential — a dispiriting note that “Zurawski v Texas” has no choice but to end on. But miraculously, something other than defeat emerges amid that loss: hope, carried on the shoulders of the fearless fighters given a voice by this film.”
