‘Goat Girl’ Trailer – Ana Asensio’s Coming-of-Age Drama Set in 1980s Madrid Gets US Release Date

Set against the sweltering backdrop of Madrid in 1988, Goat Girl (La niña de la cabra) is a moving coming-of-age story written and directed by Ana Asensio.

The film follows eight-year-old Elena as she prepares for her First Communion while coping with the recent death of her grandmother. Her life changes after meeting Serezade, a Romani girl inseparable from her goat, whose free-spirited worldview challenges everything Elena has been taught.

Starring in the film are Alessandra González, Juncal Fernández, Lorena López, Javier Pereira, Enrique Villén, and Gloria Muñoz.

Goat Girl made its world premiere at the Málaga Film Festival and is slated for a U.S. theatrical release, opening Friday, June 19 at New York’s Cinema Village with other cities to follow. Opening weekend will feature Q&A’s with the director Ana Asensio, moderated by Larry Fassenden and Sam Zimmerman.

Goat Girl centers on eight-year-old Elena as she prepares for her First Communion in 1988 Madrid, while wrestling with the loss of her grandmother. Her burgeoning friendship with Serezade, a gypsy girl always accompanied by her goat, pushes Elena to challenge what she has been taught about the world. The film beautifully renders the dark and mysterious facets of life through a girl’s eyes, capturing tensions between childhood and adulthood, and touching on themes of classism, racism, religion, and emotional honesty, all with extraordinary tenderness.

Writer/Director Ana Asensio was born in Madrid, Madrid, Spain. She is an actress and producer. Goat Girl is her sophomore film, following Most Beautiful Island (2017), which earned her the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW.
