Anthony Firth’s Mockbuster is a comedy-filled mockumentary that chronicles his experience directing a film for The Asylum, the (in)famous studio behind the pop culture phenomenon Sharknado.
The film follows Firth, described as a struggling filmmaker, when Sharknado’s notorious studio, The Asylum, invites him to direct a “mockbuster.” With six days, a micro budget, and mounting pressure, Mockbuster is a comedic, behind-the-scenes documentary exploring the balance between low-budget filmmaking and creative ambition.
Featured in the film alongside Frith are David Latt, Paul Bales, David Rimawi, and Brendan Petrizzo.
Mockbuster will be released in select theaters and on digital platforms beginning July 10.

With a once-promising film career flattened to corporate video gigs, director Anthony Frith decides to shoot his shot — literally — by pitching himself to The Asylum to direct a lost-world dinosaur epic. Against all reason, the studio famous for its guilty-pleasure exploitation films says yes. What follows is a madcap production in suburban Adelaide, shot in just six days on a budget that could generously be described as “aspirational.”
Frith isn’t just directing The Land That Time Forgot — he’s also helming the behind-the-scenes documentary that is Mockbuster, capturing the beautiful mess of full-blown B-movie filmmaking. Throughout the shoot, Frith navigates the gloriously chaotic orbit of the Asylum as he attempts to keep a prehistoric adventure afloat amid rubber dinosaurs, last-minute rewrites, and caffeinated panic.
