A blind date goes spectacularly off the rails in All Night Wrong, a genre-bending comedy thriller starring Maria Bakalova and Zach Cherry.
Directed by Jason James, the film follows two strangers whose awkward first date quickly turns into a desperate race for survival after they stumble into a deadly criminal conspiracy. James, whose previous work includes Entanglement and That Burning Feeling, brings together an impressive ensemble supported by Emily Hampshire and Tyler Labine.
All Night Wrong made its world premiere at SXSW London, and is now slated to open in U.S. theaters on August 14, 2026.
Here is the official synopsis: “Gary and Ell, a married coward and a broken-hearted widow, meet for an online date only to wind up stealing a killer’s car along with a dead body and $40,000 in cash. With blood on their hands and no way to prove their innocence, the two make the very questionable decision to bury the dead man and cover up any trace of the crime. But when they discover the dead man’s dying wish and a cryptic clue in the form of a camera memory card, Gary and Ell set out to solve the mystery of his death and deliver one last message to the love of his life. What follows is a long night of bad choices, awkward conversations, fights, punks, cops, lies, crimes, mystery, betrayal, and a dangerous killer, all ending in some life-changing decisions and very hard truths.”
Speaking about what drew him to the project, director Jason James explained, “The script came to me from a writer that I’ve collaborated with quite a bit named Jason Filiatrault, and it was just a mashup of my two favourite things, neo-noir and rom-com. If I could pick my two favourite films, it’d be Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest and Billy Wilder’s The Apartment. So I was super excited to mix these genres and mash them up and create something exciting and new.”
James added, “What I loved about this film is that it is sort of an anti-romantic comedy in that there are these two people that are coming together for the wrong reasons – they shouldn’t be together, but they form this unlikely friendship or bond over the course of this one insane night.”
Mashable described All Night Wrong as “It’s a film as playful as it is bloody, with a perfectly threatening Labine finding his own No Country for Old Men-style pre-kill monologues with utter conviction, as a tired, jaded man who just can’t understand why anyone would want to live in freezing cold Canada.”
