Todd Haynes’ Wonderstruck will be the Closing Night film of this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival on Friday, October 13. Shut Up and Say Something, Melanie Wood’s entrancing documentary about internationally acclaimed spoken word artist Shane Koyczan, will screen at its BC Spotlight Awards Gala on Saturday, October 7.
Todd Haynes (Carol) returns with Wonderstruck a marvelous time-traveling tale that follows the parallel fortunes of two deaf 12-year-olds – Ben (Oakes Fegley), a lad in 1977 Michigan, and Rose (luminous newcomer Millicent Simmonds), a girl in 1927 New Jersey – who, for seemingly different reasons, are drawn to a gloriously rendered New York City in search of their own burgeoning identities.
VIFF unveiled its inspiring Creator Talks program, as well as the VIFF LIVE lineup.

Mina Shum’s Meditation Park will be showcased as the Opening Night Gala Film of the 2017 Vancouver International Film Festival. On the heels of her critically acclaimed 2015 documentary, Ninth Floor, Shum makes a triumphant return to narrative filmmaking with this bittersweet comedy about a devoted Chinese-Canadian wife and mother (Cheng Pei Pei) who is shaken out of her isolation and stupor by suspicions that her husband (Tzi Ma) has been untrue. Shum makes fantastic use of East Vancouver and Chinatown locations and draws fantastic performances from an all-star cast that also includes Sandra Oh and Don McKellar.
VIFF will present Movie Nights Across Canada as part of its opening night festivities on September 28, 2017.
The festival also revealed 18 additional Canadian feature films in the True North stream and Future//Present film series, which celebrate the extraordinary creativity and craft being demonstrated by Canadian storytellers from coast to coast.

The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) has unveiled the festival’s much-anticipated Sea to Sky programming stream: a showcase of the inspired works from British Columbia. Sea to Sky’s name reflects this province’s diverse creators and the astonishing range of storytelling techniques they employ.
The 2017 BC Spotlight film lineup features 12 titles. On the heels of world premiere announcements at the Toronto International Film festival, Kathleen Hepburn’s Never Steady, Never Still, Wayne Wapeemukwa’s Luk’Luk’I and Kyle Rideout’s Public Schooled will play to eager hometown audiences. Jason James’ Entanglement, Peter Ricq’s Dead Shack, Scooter Corkle’s Hollow in the Land and Cody Bown’s Gregoire will likewise hit Vancouver screens having already made their marks on the festival circuit.
VIFF will also be home to five world premieres, including Ana Valine’s Once There Was a Winter, Melanie Wood’s Shut Up and Say Something, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ c’əsnaʔəm, the city before the city (in partnership and collaboration with the Musqueam First Nation and the c’əsnaʔəm, the city before the city curatorial team), Boris Ivanov’s On Putin’s Blacklist and LaTiesha Ti’si’tla Fazakas and Natalie Boll’s Meet Beau Dick: Maker of Monsters.
All films in the BC Spotlight will compete in the #mustseeBC competition. Launching on September 14, this social media campaign invites film fans to preview these features and the still-to-be-announced BC shorts, promote local creators across social networks and vote online to determine this year’s most anticipated local films. By successfully engaging thousands of fans through social media, the winning film receives a special red carpet screening during the festival.
Totally Indie Day, presented by STORYHIVE, is a dynamic day designed to provide hands-on advice from top experienced industry professionals to emerging content creators through targeted business, creative and personal development opportunities. This tent pole industry event supports rising feature film directors, by connecting them with award-winning screenwriters, directors and producers from some of the most popular and successful screen-based content series, today. Attendees also have the chance to meet with Canadian and US distributors and network with industry professionals.
The 34th Vancouver International Film Festival will run from September 24th to October 9th, 2015 with John Crowley’s Brooklyn starting the festival off in the Opening Night Gala spot. With scripting by Nick Hornby (Wild, An Education), this 50s-era immigration film is an exhilarating tale of female empowerment. Marc Abraham’s I Saw the Light holds the Closing Night Gala position with a feature on the life of country star Hank Williams. Produced by Vancouver’s Bron Studios, this film reflects the best in BC’s ongoing production boom. Canadian productions remain front and centre when Philippe Falardeau’s My Internship in Canada opens the Canadian Images program, while Patricia Rozema’s Into the Forest takes the BC Spotlight Awards Gala spot.

RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS is described by the festival as a very powerful and beautifully produced film, with a stellar cast and excellent photography and design. Depicting the aftereffects of the trauma inflicted by residential schools on the First Nations population, it also succeeds in telling a universal and touching story of an oppressed people trying to survive, rebuild and come to terms with their suffering. Using a highly creative vocabulary, from realistic to metaphorical, from fantastic to poetic, Jeff Barnaby demonstrates a promising and already impressive talent as a filmmaker.
THAT BURNING FEELING is noted as one of the best comedies the jury has seen in a long time. With a witty, smart and highly-articulate script, a talented cast and beautiful production, it makes for a wonderful self-deprecating portrait of Vancouver, with its condo maniacs, yoga lovers, community activists and other odd characters. While making us laugh along the way, it tells the human story of trying to find authenticity in a crazy world. Jason James is a rising filmmaker to watch with his wit, keen eye and intelligence.

The 29th annual Vancouver International Film Festival concluded its 16-day run with the closing gala screening the French film THE ILLUSIONIST (L’illusioniste), directed by Sylvain Chomet.
