CUFF.Docs, Calgary’s Documentary Film Festival presented by the Calgary Underground Film Festival has released its lineup of 13 groundbreaking feature documentaries, covering everything from medical cannabis to slam poetry and swamp rats.
The five-day festival, running November 28 to December 2 at Globe Cinema, will open on Wednesday, November 28 with MR FISH: CARTOONING FROM THE DEEP END, about the political cartoonist known for his subversive and often controversial art. Director Pablo Bryant and documentary subject Dwayne Booth (Mr Fish himself) will be in attendance and are available for media interviews prior to the screening.
On the final day of the festival, the local film WOLVES UNLEASHED: AGAINST ALL ODDS from director and world-renowned wolf trainer Andrew Simpson will play with Simpson in attendance. Simpson has worked with wolves on Alberta productions including THE REVENANT, GAME OF THRONES, WYNONNA EARP, and this film documents his time in China raising and training wild Mongolian wolves for a Chinese blockbuster. Andrew Simpson is available for media interviews prior to the screening.
“At CUFF.Docs we always we look for a mix of festival favorites and award-winning films,” said Festival Director and Lead Programmer Brenda Lieberman. “This is a collection of documentaries that will entertain or educate regardless of whether you’ve heard of the story or subject before.”
Other guests coming to CUFF.Docs are: Nikhil Melnechuk, slam poet and producer of DON’T BE NICE about a team of young New York City slam poets competing for the National Championship, and Scott Christopherson, director of THE INSUFFERABLE GROO, which tells the story of prolific and eccentric filmmaker Stephen Groo as he tries to recruit Jack Black for his latest project.
Documentary highlights include a new film about the Sri Lanka pop star and political activist M.I.A (MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A.), the Sundance award-winning skateboarding film MINDING THE GAP, RODENTS OF UNUSUAL SIZE: an environmental study of nutria – giant swamp rats in Louisiana – from CUFF alumni Chris Metzler, Jeff Springer and Quinn Costello, and WEED THE PEOPLE, a timely look at the medical benefits of cannabis.
CARMINE STREET GUITARS (a day-in-the-life story of the acclaimed guitar shop), HAL (a bio about the acclaimed 1970s Hollywood director Hal Ashby), PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF DESIRE (a look at the Chinese online streaming platform YY) THE CLEANERS (an expose about the hidden shadow industry of digital cleaning) and THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING (an exploration of the systemic sexism in Hollywood) round out the 13 film lineup.

This year’s 2018 Indie Memphis Film Festival is promising to be a very exciting and wildly varied one, with a lineup featuring five World Premiere screenings and one U.S. Premiere screening, as well as Special Presentations such as CABIN BOY with Chris Elliott in attendance and Barbara Loden’s feminist masterpiece WANDA presented by Amy Seimetz (Showtime’s “The Girlfriend Experience”), as well as a retrospective of the recent films of filmmaker Hong Sangsoo.
The Opening Night film is Melissa Haizlip and Samuel D. Pollard’s MR. SOUL!, a documentary chronicling Ellis Haizlip, the host of a groundbreaking weekly TV show called SOUL! that aired from 1968-1973, Barry Jenkins’ IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK as the Centerpiece Presentation, and Andrew Bujaski’s SUPPORT THE GIRLS as the Closing Night selection, followed by Bujalski presenting the “Indie Memphis Actor of the Year” award for an unforgettable role by a promising new performer to one of the film’s stars, Shayna McHayle (aka Junglepussy). As previously announced, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU filmmaker Boots Riley will be the festival’s keynote speaker for the Black Creatives Forum as well as presenting BRAZIL (1985, Terry Gilliam). The festival also includes 165 short films and over 50 music videos.
This year’s festival should prove to be a very diverse one, as fifty percent of the films in the Narrative Competition are directed by female-identifying filmmakers and fifty percent are directed by people of color; in the Documentary Competition, forty-three percent are directed by women and seventy-one percent by people of color. In addition to films from the United States, the festival also boasts titles from Spain, France, South Korea, Israel, Germany, Australia, Zambia, United Kingdom, Portugal, Canada, and Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) today announced the winners of the 2018 Golden Space Needle Audience and Competition Awards. Eighth Grade received the Golden Space Needle Audience Award for Best Film and a Best Actress Award for Elise Fisher. Won’t You Be My Neighbor won Best Documentary and Grand Jury prizes went to The Reports on Sarah and Saleem, Dead Pigs, Rust, Inventing Tomorrow, and Thunder Road.
Artistic Director Beth Barrett said, “Executive Director Sarah Wilke and I were thrilled to present Ethan Hawke with the Festival’s Outstanding Achievement Award in Cinema before a screening of Blaze, his latest directing effort, as well as welcoming Melanie Lynskey back to the Festival for a special screening of Seattle based local film, Sadie. We also had an incredible lineup of local films, and our documentary film selection continues to be among the best in the country. Back for the second year was SIFF’s New Works-in-Progress Forum, where we screened two narrative and two documentary features in the midst of their creative process to the Seattle audience of industry and festival attendees, as well as continuing our exploration of the intersections between cinema and Virtual Reality at our first Pop-up event, SIFF VR Zone at Pacific Place.”
2018 New Zealand International Film Festival Artwork[/caption]
The New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF) revealed the first nine films selected for 2018 program plus the official artwork. The films include Disobedience starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams, Harry Dean Stanton’s final film Lucky, Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here starring Joaquin Phoenix, period piece Zama from Argentinian auteur Lucrecia Martel, and a documentary feature on the pioneering women’s rights activist and US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG).
“When we receive multiple requests we take notice and if we can’t deliver, that’s usually because somebody else will. We’ve been hearing requests for Lynne Ramsey’s film since its debut in Cannes a year ago – and the requests for RBG have been thick and fast since the US reviews came out only last week,” says NZIFF director Bill Gosden.
Buckets of splendor, exotic and native, and a typically discriminating NZIFF patron are celebrated in the artwork for 2018. Illustrator Ken Samonte, inspired by New Yorker covers and the work of Hayao Miyazaki, also references the previous NZIFF illustration style of artist Tom Simpson.

The 2018 Sarasota Film Festival (SFF) announced its full line-up, including its Centerpiece, Spotlight, Narrative Feature Competition, Independent Visions Competition, Documentary Feature Competition, Narrative, Documentary, and Short Films. The Festival also announced its five SFF Focus Panels – Sports in Cinema, Environment, Science, and Sustainability, Women’s Comedic Voices, Redefining Manhood, and Musings on Musicians.
“In honor of our 20th anniversary, we have programmed a lineup that celebrates the past, present, and future of the Sarasota Film Festival that is sure to delight our dedicated and passionate audiences,” said Mark Famiglio, Chairman and President of the Sarasota Film Festival. “The selection includes a diverse group of narratives and voices that will create engaging conversations about today’s most important topics.”
In the Festival’s Centerpiece section is 1985, about a closeted gay man, unable to come out to his friends and family during the beginning of the AIDS crisis, staring Academy Award®-nominated actress Virginia Madsen, who will be attendance at the Festival. Also a Centerpiece selection is Bo Burnham’s feature film directorial debut, EIGHTH GRADE, a portrait of young teenagers discovering their identities online and in reality. Bo will be in attendance for a Q&A following the film’s screening during the Festival.

Each year the Sarasota Film Festival focuses on social issues to highlight throughout its program. The Sports in Cinema Focus returns this year, welcoming Ben and Orson Cummings and their film KILLER BEES, produced by Shaquille O’Neill. Other films in this focus include the Closing Day Film, Jason Kohn’s LOVE MEANS ZERO and Dana Adam Shapiro’s DAUGHTERS OF THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE DALLAS COWBOY CHEERLEADERS.
