A Mosquito in the Ear, starring Jake Lacy, Nazanin Boniadi, and Ruhi Pal, tells a story about a couple’s efforts to welcome their adopted child into their family.
The film premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where it received the Panavision Spirit Award for Independent Cinema, and recently opened this year’s Brooklyn Film Festival. It is slated to be released in theaters starting in Los Angeles on June 11 and in New York on June 19.
A Mosquito in the Ear is based on the true story written by Andrea Ferraris in her graphic novel of the same name. Now, its film counterpart is directed and co-written by BAFTA newcomer Nicola Rinciari in his directorial debut.

The film follows Andrew (Lacy) and Daniela (Boniadi) as they travel to Goa, India, to meet their newly adopted 4-year-old daughter, Sarvari (Pal), and take her to the U.S. But when Sarvari refuses to leave the orphanage, a place she calls home, the couple finds themselves in the midst of chaos and emotional challenges, which largely reshape their ideas of family, parenthood, and their relationship.
Rinciari said, “A Mosquito in the Ear offers a window into the world of international adoption, portrayed as authentically as we could, with the joys, challenges, and shortcomings of a process that can always be improved. Our hope is for the audience to reflect on what they see and, most importantly, to feel for their families who must will themselves into existence.”
Critic Aaron Goldstein, in his review, noted that “the dynamic performances by Lacy, Boniadi, and Pal make A Mosquito in the Ear worth audiences’ time, and it’s all held together by a visually impressive feature-length directorial debut from Rinciari.”
