  • 9 Short Films and 18 Student Films Selected for 2013 Cannes Film Festival

    Nine films will compete in 2013 for the Short Film Palme d’or,  at the 66th Festival de Cannes. For the first time, a Palestinian film will take part in the Short Films Competition.  

    In the Cinéfondation Selection, 18 films (14 fiction films and 4 animated films) were selected from 277 film schools from all around the world. The Cinéfondation Selection features films from film students from a diversity of film schools, with a third of the schools being selected for the first time and one country – Chile – which has never previously been selected.

  • Zulu Starring Forest Whitaker, Orlando Bloom to Close 2013 Cannes Film Festival

    The 66th Festival de Cannes aka Cannes Film Festival, has chosen the thriller Zulu starring  Forest Whitaker, Orlando Bloom and Tanya van Graan to close the festival on May 26, 2013. The film which shot entirely on location in South Africa by Jérôme Salle is adapted from the novel of the same name by Caryl Férey.

    The action takes place in Cape Town, in a South Africa still overshadowed by apartheid, where destitute townships rubs shoulders with affluent neighborhoods  Two cops on the beat, Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean by Gore Verbinski, Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson) and Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland by Kevin McDonald, Ghost Dog, La Voie du Samouraï by Jim Jarmush) are caught up in a suspenseful search which combines elements of political film noir and social study.

    Interesting tid bit: In 1988, Forest Whitaker won Best Male Actor at Cannes for his role in Clint Eastwood’s Bird.

  • The Great Gatsby Starring Leonardo DiCaprio to Open 2013 Cannes Film Festival

    The Great Gatsby by Australian director Baz Luhrmann, will open the 66th Festival de Cannes, on Wednesday 15th May, 2013, in the Grand Théâtre Lumière of the Palais des Festivals, out of Competition in the Official Selection.

    Adapted from the famous novel by American author Francis Scott Fitzgerald and set against the roaring twenties on the East Coast of the United States, the film depicts the romantic and tragic figure of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), as narrated by his friend Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire). Carey Mulligan is Daisy Buchanan, whose husband is played by Joel Edgerton.

  • Cannes Film Festival Unveils 2013 Poster Featuring Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman

    For its 66th edition poster, the Festival de Cannes has chosen the image of Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman, photographed during the shooting of  A New Kind of Love, by Melville Shavelson (1963). 

    The Festival describes its choice as a chance both to pay tribute to the memory of Paul Newman, who passed away in 2008, and to mark its undying admiration for Joanne Woodward, his wife and most favoured co-star.

    They were honoured at the Festival de Cannes in 1958 – the year of their marriage – with the selection In Competition of Martin Ritt’s The Long Hot Summer, the first film in which they appeared together.

  • Director Steven Spielberg is Jury President of 2013 Cannes Film Festival

    Director and producer Steven Spielberg will head up the jury of the 66th Cannes Film Festival taking place May 15-26, 2013.

    “The memory of my first Cannes Film Festival, nearly 31 years ago with the debut of E.T., is still one of the most vibrant memories of my career, Spielberg goes on. For over six decades, Cannes has served as a platform for extraordinary films to be discovered and introduced to the world for the first time. It is an honor and a privilege to preside over the jury of a festival that proves, again and again, that cinema is the language of the world.”

  • Claude Miller’s Thérèse Desqueyroux to Close 2012 Cannes Film Festival

    Thérèse Desqueyroux directed by Claude Miller who died earlier this month, and starring Audrey Tautou, Gilles Lellouche and Anaïs Demoustier, will close the 65th Cannes Film Festival on 27 May.

    Claude Miller’s final film is described by the festival as an adaptation of François Mauriac’s novel “Thérèse Desqueyroux”. On the 4th of April of this year, Miller passed away, and this film is the final piece in his immense body of work, to which the Cannes Film Festival and the director’s many admirers will pay tribute.

    Claude Miller’s formative years were in Nouvelle Vague cinema, working as an assistant to François Truffaut, “the filmmaker of the intimate”.  Through the evolution of his work, he created a universe that could speak to a very broad audience, from The Best Way to Walk (La meilleure façon de marcher) (1976) to The Grilling (Garde à vue) (1981), from Deadly Run (Mortelle randonnée) (1983) to The Accompanist (l’Accompagnatrice) (1992) and A secret (Un secret) (2007), from the Prix Delluc for The Hussy (l’Effrontée) (1985) to the Jury Prize at the Festival de Cannes for Class Trip (la Classe de neige) (1998). As a politically engaged filmmaker, he also chaired the Association of Filmmakers and Producers (Association des réalisateurs producteurs) and was active in the “Club des 13”, a think tank for reforming the production system.By dedicating the closing night to him, the Festival de Cannes, along with his family, friends, producers, and distributors, is very pleased to pay tribute to the memory of Claude Miller.

  • Cannes Film Festival Reveals 2012 Cinéfondation and Short Films

    The Official Selection for short films to screen at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival was unveiled yesterday.

    The Cinéfondation and Short Films Jury, presided over by Jean-Pierre Dardenne, will reward the best films from the Short Film Competition and the Cinéfondation Selection.

    Ten films have been selected from among the 4,500 films that were submitted to the selection committee to compete for the 2012 Short Film Palme d’or . For the first time, both a Syrian and a Puerto Rican film-maker are participating in the competition, which also welcomes a French artist best known in the world of music: rapper Hamé from the group La Rumeur.

  • Tim Roth to be president of the Un Certain Regard Jury at 2012 Cannes Film Festival

    English actor and director Tim Roth will be the president of the Un Certain Regard Jury, part of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival Official Selection.

    He is an English actor who began his career in television before moving on to cinema with The Hit directed by Stephen Frears, Tim Roth made his first appearances at Cannes with Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino (Palme d’or, 1994)  which earned him international renown. In 1995, he was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Rob Roy directed by Michael Caton-Jones. Roth directed his first film in 1999: The War Zone, which received nominations at Cannes, Sundance and Toronto. He also appeared in The New World directed by Terrence Malick, Don’t Come Knocking directed by Wim Wenders, Planet of the Apes directed by Tim Burton, Funny Games directed by Michael Haneke and Everyone Says I Love You directed by Woody Allen. Since 2009, he has starred in the lead role of successful American TV series Lie to Me.

    The 2011 Prix Un Certain Regard was a tie, awarded to Arirang directed by Kim Ki-Duk (Korea) and Halt Auf Freier Strecke (Stopped on Track) by Andreas Dresen (Germany).

  • Jean-Pierre DARDENNE to Preside Over Jury for Cinéfondation and short films at 2012 Cannes Film Festival

    Belgian director, scriptwriter and producer Jean-Pierre DARDENNE who along with his brother Luc won Grand Prix at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival for The Kid with a Bike in 2011, after winning two Palmes d’Or, first in 1999 for Rosetta and then in 2005 for The Child, and the prize for best screenplay in 2008 for Lorna’s Silence, will preside over the jury for the Cinéfondation and short films at this year’s festival.

    The jury will include Arsinée KHANJIAN (Canadian actress), Karim AÏNOUZ (Brazilian director and scriptwriter), Emmanuel CARRÈRE (French writer, scriptwriter and director) and YU Lik-wai (Chinese director of photography and filmmaker).

    The short-film competition, composed of previously unscreened works, has in the past discovered artists who have risen to fame: Jane CAMPION and Nuri Bilge CEYLAN, Xavier GIANNOLI, Lynne RAMSAY and Catalin MITULESCU all received their first recognition with a short film in competition in Cannes.

    For its part, the Sélection de la Cinéfondation, created in 1998, has screened the student films of many directors whose talent was subsequently confirmed with a feature film, including Vimukthi JAYASUNDARA (Caméra d’Or 2005),  Corneliu PORUMBOIU (Caméra d’Or 2006), Kornél MUNDRUCZÓ (In Competition 2008 & 2010) and Jessica HAUSNER (Un Certain Regard 2001 & 2004).

    Wes Anderon’s new film, MOONRISE KINGDOM, will open the 65th Festival de Cannes on Wednesday, May 16, 2012.

    Starring Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman as well as Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman playing the pre-adolescents, MOONRISE KINGDOM recounts a tormented and surprising story of children and adults during the stormy days of the summer of 1965.

  • Italian actor and director Nanni Moretti to be President of the Jury of the 65th Festival de Cannes

    Nanni Moretti will be President of the Jury of the 65th Festival de Cannes to be held from May 16 to 27, 2012.

    Accepting the invitation, the Italian actor and director said: “This is a real joy, an honour and a tremendous responsibility to preside over the jury of the most prestigious festival of cinematography in the world, a festival that is held in a country where film has always been treated with interest and respect.

    As a director, I was always very moved when my films were presented at the Festival de Cannes. I also have very happy memories of my experience as a jury member during the fiftieth anniversary season, and of the attentiveness and passion that went into the jury’s viewing and discussion of all the films.

    As a spectator, fortunately I still have the same curiosity that I had in my youth and so it is a great privilege for me to embark on this voyage into the world of contemporary international film.”

    Nanni Moretti has presented six films at the Festival de Cannes, including last year’s Habemus Papam (We Have a Pope).
